The Brussels International Center (BIC) expresses its profound concern regarding the escalating crisis in Sudan, which has been deteriorating alarmingly over the past 10 months. The conflict, marked by a devastating war between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudan's army, has led to the tragic loss of over 12,000 lives, including women, men, and children. This turmoil has not only cost precious lives but has also displaced more than 7.5 million people from their homes, creating a dire humanitarian situation. The severity of this crisis is further highlighted by the fact that half of Sudan's population, approximately 25 million people, now require humanitarian assistance.

Adding to the gravity of the situation is the recent and concerning development that major telecom services in Sudan have been cut for a week. This blackout has severely hindered communication, leaving many unable to reach their family members and exacerbating the hardships faced by the Sudanese people. The lack of connectivity not only isolates individuals and communities but also poses significant challenges in coordinating aid and response efforts. The BIC urges immediate action to restore these essential services and calls for a concerted international effort to address the humanitarian needs and work towards a peaceful resolution in Sudan. The international community must not remain silent as millions suffer and the stability of the region hangs in balance.

"The crisis in Sudan is not just a humanitarian catastrophe but a stark reminder of the intricate interplay between conflict, displacement, and technology in modern warfare," said Fernando Aguiar, Senior Advisor at the BIC. "If confirmed by sources, the deliberate disruption of telecom services is a strategic move that magnifies the chaos and isolation already inflicted by the conflict.”

The BIC will continue to monitor the situation on the ground.
