Last Spring, Hezbollah began distributing magnetic cards that allow its supporters to receive a cash allowance and large discounts on basic goods. The so-called “al-Sajjad” card, which is credited with a maximum of 300,000 Lebanese pounds, gives access to party-affiliated supermarkets which are otherwise off limits to the public.

August 4th, 2021 marks the one-year anniversary of the Beirut blast, an explosion of ammonium nitrate that was being stored in the Beirut port, resulting in the death of over 200 people and injuring thousands more. One year later, Lebanon, and the Lebanese people, are still struggling with the aftermath of the explosion, mentally, physically and politically. The BIC has been monitoring the repercussions of the explosion over the past year along with the  evolving political and economic crisis in Lebanon.

The Brussels International Center expresses its deep sadness over the death of human rights activist and former legislative candidate Nizar Banat, following his arrest by Palestinian security forces last night. During the night, Palestinian officers arrested Nizar Banat in his home near the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.
