Strong dissatisfaction arose in the beginning of October in Iraq. The demonstrations appear as a consequence of the lack of social opportunities within the society as well as the rampant corruption that affects the whole country. Moreover, the Iranian influence over Iraq, mainly through the support of Shia militias and political formations, further intensify the existing tensions.

The Brussels International Center for Research and Human Right (BIC) is deeply concerned about the outbreak and severity of the violent protests in Iraq. For the past week, security forces in Baghdad have fired live rounds at protesters defying a curfew, killing over 30 people and injuring hundreds more throughout the country. On 12th September 2019, Australian authorities revealed a new case of foreigner’s arrest in Iran, confirming the incarceration of two of its citizens in Evin Prison. The 17th of September, the judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esma’ili confirmed the arrest of the two Australians, charged of espionage. The couple is accused of having taken pictures of a military site near Tehran. According to the same source, they used a drone equipped with a camera.
